Megan’s Dataviz Resource List

Recently, I’ve been making a lot of data visualizations, posting them on my Twitter page, and engaging with the dataviz community there (#DataFam). I’ve picked up a lot of dataviz-related resources so far, and I wanted to start a categorized list of them here for my own future reference, as well as for others who are interested in dataviz. So without further ado: Welcome to Megan’s Dataviz Resource List!

* The base for this list of challenges came from Autumn’s Declassified Tableau Survival Guide, which can be found here.

Color & Colormap Resources

  • Color blindness simulator - Upload your dataviz to see what it would look like for different types and severities of colorblindness.

  • Data Viz Color Palette Generator - Choose your two endpoint colors and a number of shades, get back the hex codes of each of the visually equidistant colors!

  • Colorpicker for Data - Similar to the previous bullet point, this tool lets you choose two endpoint colors and returns a range of shades between.

Python & Matplotlib Resources

  • The Python Graph Gallery - Lots of different types of chart, each with the Python code to make them (using both matplotlib and Seaborn).

  • Seaborn - A package for statistical data visualization in Python.

  • Scientific Visualization - An open access book (a work in progress) on scientific visualization using python and matplotlib.

  • Matplotlib Cheatsheet - A beautiful, multi-page cheatsheet for everything matplotlib.

Connecting with the Community

  • Mentoring Meetup - A way to find a mentor or a mentee in your Tableau journey.

  • Dataviz Book Club - Read and discuss books about dataviz 3-4 times per year. This book club is run by Lisa Charlotte Rost, who works for Datawrapper.
